Guten Tag (I think)

Arrived in Germany at the Frankfurt airport 1 hour early! Didn´t know
this could happen. Too early to check in for my next flight though –
I´ve been here hours now and the desk doesn´t open for another 20
minutes!

Yesterday I got to visit with Shelley at JFK airport (of all places in
the world for us to meet up! – first time there for both of us).
Shelley bought me a bon voyage dinner and was even able to wave me off
at the gate! We hadn´t seen each other since she moved to NYC.

Better go check on that next flight now…

Well, I’m (almost) off!

So I fly out of Ottawa tomorrow! Just a few glitches this past week (having to deal with travel insurance twice and falling on the ice – again!). It will be nice to be away from all this crazy winter weather. I’m not a fan of the cold, but this year Ottawa has just been too icy (it’s not usually like this – I’ll take cold winters over mild yet unpredictable ones). This is as slippery as I remember Kingston being!

I got a huge, surprise bonus – Jancey gave me some South African Rand, so I actually have the proper currency to use when I arrive! This is such a treat – I wasn’t expecting it, and figured that it would be the first thing I would have to get once I stumble off the plane (around 5:30 am South Africa time – 10:30 pm or so our time, so maybe I will be alert…).

Blog categories

I’ve been trying to figure out how to arrange my blog posts so that I can group specific entries into categories such as “Books,” “Friends and Family,” “Life in Ottawa,” “Travel,” etc. (see lower right hand corner of the screen to see what I mean).

When I asked around for tips, I was pointed to some advice on Taher Baderkhan’s blog: Blogger Categories in 5 minutes (thanks, Dave!).

The steps Baderkhan outlines are easy to follow, but for some reason my latest posts haven’t been indexed (the categories will only work once the Blogger index is searching this content). Hopefully everything will be up and running soon and I can see whether I like this set up. For now, this is just an explanation for why the links in the bottom corner aren’t working yet…

BiblioTravel entry

I’ve added Dark Star Safari to BiblioTravel – this book took me about 6 months to read, but it was worth it (good preparation for my trip, even though I’m only visiting one country in Africa)!

Here’s an excerpt from my entry:

… Theroux’s journey takes him from the top of Africa to the southernmost tip. As he explores eastern Africa (mainly by bus, car, or train) he tries to offer readers a view of the continent that is different from what we are likely to find in newspaper headlines.

Where pedestrians dare not tread

James and I have something we do in Ottawa about once a year or so.

We go where you are only supposed to go by car.

Once it was a trip to the Science and Technology Museum, in the dead of winter (I think it was February). From what I remember, the bus ride there took a few hours. Even the walk from the bus stop to the entrance of the museum took quite a while and felt like a route few people had actually walked along.

Our next notable jaunt was when I was shopping around for furniture. We made it out to Ikea and Leon’s in Ottawa’s west end – not only did the intersections feel like they weren’t designed for people to use, but the lack of sidewalks on the way to both stores made us feel like we just weren’t supposed to be there. And after we had crossed a major highway by bridge and everything.

Most recently, we decided to make the trek out to Best Buy. And it went quite well! The most difficult part was not quite knowing where we were (this time we were east of downtown, near the train station, but we weren’t sure of our bearings). But since we managed to avoid getting drenched by the 3-foot high splashes the passing cars made, we considered the trip a success!
